Dave Porter: Putting Family First

Dave Porter (of Red Rock International Guinea) has learned many valuable lessons in his life.  However, few have been more valuable than the lesson about the importance of putting family first.  Porter knows that when family goes first, everything else will just fall into place.  But, when you sacrifice your family for the advancement of your career, you’ll never win in the long run.

When it comes to careers, Dave Porter has had a few – all of them quite successful ones, too.  Porter was an insurance salesman early in life, primarily working for Aflac.  In his best year, Porter was the third top-selling insurance salesman in the nation.  He was also the top sales agent for Utah and the western United States.  Dave Porter also enjoyed a career as a licensed mortgage broker in Utah and Nevada prior to taking up with Red Rock International Guinea.

Today, Dave Porter is successful as an international importing/exporting businessman.  He sells high-quality rough and uncut diamonds from West Africa to gem cutters and dealers all over the world.  Working from Utah, Dave Porter is able to spend a lot of time with his family.  However, he knows the dangers of being tempted into over-working.

In order to keep his family first, Dave Porter commits himself to a few basic rules.

  1. He always knows what his children are interested in, and always makes sure there’s plenty of time to talk with them about their interests.
  2. He sets aside time each week that’s always used for family time.  This is a great chance to enjoy an activity together.  Sometimes the activity will be a particular sport, other times it will be a family outing.
  3. Dave Porter makes sure his family has a strong church life.  Because he’s highly involved with his home church, it’s important to him that his family also gets involved with the church.
